| The Emergency Room |
This unit is affiliated to the Endoscopy Unit and located in Department 2. Here, patients with massive upper GI bleeding are stabilized and their bleeding is controlled.
Equipment:

Upper GI endoscopes.

Equipment of injection sclerotherapy.

Intravenous fluids, plasma expanders and intravenous lines.

Resuscitation kit.
Causes of Upper GI Bleeding:

Esophageal Varices

Duodenal Ulcer

Gastric Ulcer

Gastritis or Duodenitis

Esophagitis or esophageal ulcer

Mallory-Weiss tear
-
Gastrointestinal malignancy

Dieulafoy's Lesion
-
Artery at gastric fundus may bleed heavily

Difficult to identify on endoscopy

Gastric antral vascular ectasia

Longitudinal erythematous stripes on gastric mucosa

Known as Watermelon stomach

Arteriovenous malformation

Angiodysplasia of stomach or duodenum, associated with

Von Willebrand's Disease
After admission and stabilization, the patient is treated by an extremely well qualified and capable staff accustomed to handle any emergency situation.
Upon bleeding control, the patient is monitored and sent to the correspomding department after the follow-up schedule has been detemined. |
